What do British people call cabinets?

08-27-2024 / in News / by ZhaoXin

In British English, the term "cupboard" is commonly used to denote what many other English-speaking countries might refer to as a "cabinet." Cupboards are primarily utilized for storing kitchenware, food, or other household items and typically feature one or more doors with shelves inside.

However, the word "cabinet" is also employed in British English, particularly when describing a piece of furniture designed for storage that incorporates drawers and/or doors. It can also be utilized in specific contexts such as a "medicine cabinet" or "filing cabinet."

In certain instances, the term "unit" may be utilized, especially when discussing kitchen furniture, such as "kitchen units," which can encompass both base (under-counter) and wall-mounted cupboards.
